The Resting Grounds are a network of caverns located above the City of Tears.

A massive graveyard for Hallownest's fallen, the Resting Grounds are a sacred, solemn location, formerly the home of the Moth Tribe and used as a place of ritual for the kingdoms bugs, who now join the dead they desired to remember.

Description

The Resting Grounds are covered in tombstones and monuments, dedicated to the dead. While initially grey and colourless, obtaining the Dream Nail gives the Resting Grounds a blue colour-tone, and making visible ghostly spirits that float throughout the foreground and backdrop. The area is bathed in fog, and the colours mostly consist of blue with dark purple tones; the grounds are serene and have only a few enemies, especially when compared to the surrounding areas.

The western side of the Resting Grounds contains the Blue Lake, a wide, vibrant body of blue water, where Tiso and Quirrel can be individually encountered on opposite sides of the lake. Above the lake is a Tram leading to the Forgotten Crossroads, to the left of which is a grave where the Warrior Dream Xero can be fought. Further east are the Dreamer Shrine statues that direct to each Dreamer's location; after being interacted with, the Dreamers send the Knight into a forgotten dream that rewards the Dream Nail after it is escaped.

The Seer resides at the top of a tall portion of the northeast part of the area, being the one to free the Knight from the dream; she gives rewards when visited with specific numbers of Essence. One of these rewards is the opening of the Spirit's Glade, which is also accessed from the same vertical portion of the Grounds. Other rooms accessed from this section is a room containing the

Dreamshield Charm, and a Stag Station, both of which are opposite sides to each other.

Below the Stag Station is a fragile grave where Desolate Dive/Descending Dark can be used to enter the Crypts, a dark, underground grave full of living corpses enraged by the Infection. The dark Crypts contain the Soul Eater Charm and a path to the Grey Mourner through a cracked ceiling above a chest, as well as a breakable wall that leads to a lift, which provides easy and direct access to the east side of the City of Tears.

History

The Resting Grounds were a sacred place where bugs would come to conduct rituals for the dead.

The Moth Tribe were the caretakers of the graves, having a close relationship with dreams and the dead; they would eventually close the door to Spirits' Glade and forbid its opening for unknown reasons.

Source details: Footnote

A shrine to the Dreamers was built after they went into an eternal sleep, in order to protect the Pure Vessel as the latter contained the Infection.

When their sacrifice proved futile and the Infection returned, the remaining bugs ceased visits to the Resting Grounds, leaving the area empty and quiet.

The Seer ended up being the last survivor of her tribe, maintaining the graves and guiding the wielder of the Dream Nail.

How to Access

Source details: Media

The Resting Grounds can be first accessed in four different ways. With the Tram Pass, the Tram in the Forgotten Crossroads can be taken which leads to the west part of the Resting Grounds. Below, a hidden area above Salubra's hut can be used to enter the Grounds via the Blue Lake. Another way to enter the area is to use the lift in the east part of the City of Tears. Lastly, the chasm near the Crystallised Mound in Crystal Peak can be used to fall into the Resting Grounds.

A glade where the souls of dead bugs came to rest; this area's primary purpose is as the location where most of the Kickstarter backer spirits are found.

Upon entering the Glade, Revek warns the Knight that they will face consequences if they harm any of the Glade's "inhabitants". Once Dream Nailing at least one spirit, Revek spawns and charges at the Knight, dealing 2 Masks of damage. He cannot be damaged or defeated, but can be repelled by parrying, Dream Nailing, dashing through him using Sharp Shadow, or hitting him with the trail of the Crystal Heart Super Dash. Doing so despawns him only temporarily; he keeps appearing and attacking as long as there are spirits in the Glade. Once all spirits have been consumed, he himself can be Dream Nailed.

A hidden area behind the waterfall in a room with the moth statues. Once here, jump to the top left of the room where there is a small hidden ledge to Dream Nail the largest moth's head to access the shrine. The Monarch Wings are required to jump up this ledge, but it can also be accessed by climbing up the right wall and using the Crystal Heart. The Shrine of Believers contains a building full of breakable tablets displaying backer messages, guarded outside by the Unnamed Moth.

The inscriptions on the tablets of the Shrine can also be found here.

Its water seeps through the ground to create the rain in the City of Tears, and ultimately fills the pipes and drains in the Royal Waterways. Quirrel can be found in this area after Monomon has been killed, and Tiso can be encountered here after meeting him in the Forgotten Crossroads. This is also the last time the Knight encounters Quirrel, who disappears after a final moment is spent with him, granting the Witness achievement

Dreamer Shrine

Source details: Media

The Dreamer Shrine sits in the middle of a large cave, near the shaft at the end of the Resting Grounds. It consists of three statues on an elevated platform, each representing one of the Dreamers by their respective mask, and a written prayer revealing their locations in Hallownest. Once the Knight steps on the platform, they become trapped by seals until inspecting the tablet. After which, the Dreamers appear out of Essence and cast the Knight's consciousness into a forgotten dream.

Crypts

Source details: Media

The Crypts extend from below the Resting Grounds' shaft and further beyond. They consist of narrow tunnels and several small burial chambers, filled with entombed bugs and their possessions. Most of the rooms are separated by breakable walls and floors. A hidden burial chamber to the Snail Shamans can be found on the far right.

These tunnels can only be accessed by smashing through a damaged tomb at the bottom of the Resting Grounds' shaft. Another access was sealed from the inside and leads to the lift to the City of Tears, and further away to the Blue Lake. A collapsed ceiling in one of the chambers leads to the Grey Mansion.

Grey Mansion

Source details: Media

The Grey Mansion is the retreat of the Grey Mourner inside a cave aside the Resting Grounds. The original access corridor from the large shaft has collapsed, and the place can only be reached through the Crypts. Outside the mansion, the Knight can rest on a Bench. Inside, the Grey Mourner can entrust them with the Delicate Flower, as part of her quest.

Trivia

* An early name for Spirits' Glade was the "Glade of Hope".

Source details: Footnote

The Map sent to Kickstarter backers, which was also included in the physical edition of the game, still uses this name. * During development, a bump in the area was removed to allow for the Knight to fly across the area using Crystal Heart.
